Brouwhoeve's Saison, a farm beer

Saison Beer is a traditional salary for the seasonal worker. Nowadays a daily gift! A fresh, but spicy beer. Taste tones of citrus and fruit with a beautiful head.

Brouwhoeve Saison, fruity and spicy

Brouwhoeve Saison is a Saison brewed according to traditional Belgian recipe. This beer began as a pale ale brewed in the cooler, less active months in farms in Wallonia and stored to drink in the summer months. In that region, breweries were part of large farms. They were called ‘farm brewers’. It is to this that saison owes its nickname ‘farmer’s beer’. A hop cone more or less was not shunned to keep the beer in good condition until the summer. At that time there were no refrigerators and hops are a natural preservative. In the summer additional employees were hired, who went out to the country with a beer. This was part of their wages. A large part of the harvest was used to brew new beer in the following winter. This is how the beer spanned the seasons and so it was called ‘saison’.

Brouwhoeve Saison, also Barrel Aged

Brouwhoeve likes to go a step further. After the main fermentation and secondary fermentation we also let this Saison ripen in wooden barrels. For a period of about 7 months, this beer continues to ripen in American oak barrels with a medium branding. This pure wood offers a beautiful depth to the already beautifully present fruity, spicy and citrus flavors of this Saison. This depth translates into tones of vanilla and wood. A great addition to a fantastic lunch or extensive dinner!

Get acquainted with these wonderful flavors and you will have the opportunity to talk about the whole evening!

Saison Beer & Food

Order this Saison van de Brouwhoeve at your favourite restaurant and enjoy with the foam on the moustache.

  • Light dishes with fish or pasta and salads, but also spicier dishes can appeal to the saison. And, while we’re in season: asparagus also feels at ease with it. This subtle but tasteful beer goes well with a softly matured goat’s cheese.
  • Turkey or chicken from the oven goes well with this farmer’s beer. Classic Belgian, and could just as well go with a stew. The bitter taste doesn’t necessarily make it very summery, so we leave it until autumn.
  • Delicious in combination with a gazpacho or a summery ceasarsalada or fruit salad. Also delicious with sushi, semi-soft and spicy cheeses and (light) fish dishes such as white fish, oysters or mussels.
